In 1836, Massillon's first store was opened by John C. Brown and his brother Amos. The store became the nucleus of what would become the city's firearms industry. In 1855, two brothers named George and David Sells opened a shop on Third Street that served as the home of Plainfield Armory. In 1869, Henry Claymore established a company to make rifle bullets in Massillon. By 1886, there were 16 businesses in Massillon with an estimated population of 1,500 people. The city's nickname, "The Arsenal of the Ohio Valley," was bestowed upon it because of this role in its firearms industry. Firearm hat history in Massillon began long before the founding of Plainfield Armory in 1869. In1835, three men named Daniel Webster (a gunsmith), Solomon Northrup (an armorer) and Elijah Howe (a hatmaker) founded the Webster Hat Company in Moraine County, Ohio. This company made hats for both soldiers and civilians and continue to sellHat products today through their web site at www.webershatcompany.com/. The Web site mentions that massillons earliest firearm hat factory was built by George Sells just east of town on Third Street between Bellefontaine Road & Elmira Road - about 1860s-1870s . In 1814, when Ohio was still part of the United States, a group of investors founded the town of Massillon in present-day Youngstown, Ohio. The town was named for General George Washington’s defeated army during the American Revolution. The first white settlers in Massillon arrived from Connecticut and Rhode Island in 1796. By 1830, there were over 1,000 people living in Massillon. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two major railroads and its strategic position as a port on the Great Lakes. Massillon became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century. Papermakers such as James Fenton and John Scott built factories in Massillon until production peaked around 1920. Manufacturing companies such as Singer Sewing Machine Company, Hormel Foods Corporation, Standard Oil Company and Ford Motor Company located their operations in or near Massillon throughout this time period. During World War II, Massillon played a significant role in providing materials and labor for manufacturing plants operated by the U.S. military across Western Europe and North Africa. In 1942, massilonians produced more than 2 million pieces of military equipment including tanks, artillery cannons and airplanes. Today, massilonians continue to make some of America’s most popular products such as foodservice supplies (eager green eggs), beverage cans (Cokes) and auto parts (knob nuts). The city also hosts many cultural events throughout the year including summer festivals featuring artisans from around Northeast Ohio; fall festivals with pumpkin picking; winter car shows; ice cream socials Scotia’s Social Club meetings; quilt exhibitions; dramatic plays & concerts presented by local artists at venues like First National Bank Auditorium

It consisted of two pieces of felt covered with a piece of cloth or a band. When the person wearing it turned around, the front part of the hat would shade their face while the back part protected them from the rain or sun.
Massillon, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Stark County. The population was 44,895 at the 2010 census, making it the largest municipality in Stark County by population. The town is named after George Washington's birthplace and home near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The site for Massillon was chosen by Major General Anthony Wayne as his new military post in 1788 due to its natural barriers against Indian raids. In 1802, Massillon became part of the United States after the Treaty of Ghent ended the American Revolution. The first store opened in 1814 and frame buildings began to be erected soon afterward. Although small at first, Massillon quickly developed into an important center for commerce and culture due to its location just off I-71 between Cleveland and Cincinnati on one side and Dayton on the other. In 1825, construction began on what would become Lake Erie University; this institution would later become one of America's most prestigious universities with over 100 faculty members and more than $20 million in annual revenue ($ today). massillonian heritage has been captured through many museums located throughout town such as Heritage Museum which contains artifacts from early pioneer days through to current day massilloan life The library system has numerous branches throughout town including: Canton Branch Library (opened 1909), Harrison Branch Library (opened 1962), Main Street Branch Library (opened 1978) Today much of downtown Massillon still retains some reminders from its pioneer days including a log cabin used as a courthouse during prohibition era until it burned down in 1952 Massillon also boasts several unique attractions such as: Cavs arena which seats 11,000 people inside with a 150 foot (46 m) ceiling canopy that offers views of downtown Cleveland; replica cannons found near city limits that can be fired while standing or sitting; Wagon Wheel restaurant built over an old quarry where settlers could picnic during their drives out West; historical marker highlighting significant moments around town since 1800

In 1800, Massillon became a town under the jurisdiction of Youngstown, Ohio. The population grew rapidly after this change, and in 1814 it reached 5,000 people. By 1825, it had increased to 10,000 people and was incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, but later declined due to manufacturing decline and economic recession. In the late 19th century, however, Massillon regained some of its former prosperity through its role as a transportation hub for the region.
