These dealers were responsible for ensuring that all firearms bought from them were registered with the state government and had accurate serial numbers before being sold to customers. All this activity lead up to what is now known as “TheGunShow” which took place each year on Labor Day weekend in downtown Massillon since 1941. This rivalry led to many high-quality products being manufactured in Massillon by local entrepreneurs such as Jeremiah Dixon, Elijah Boren, John Stroudsburg, Augustus Kelley (the father of modern advertising), Hiram Wicks (founder of Wickershams grocery store), Samuel Morse (founder of Hamlin & Company grocery store), Ebenezer Howard (founder ofHoward Furniture Store), Horace Greeley (editor-in-chief of "The New York Tribune"), physician Benjamin Rush (father of Dr. Benjamin Rush), Lucius Quesnay Greene (presidential candidate on behalf of the Democratic Party in 1824) and others. Massillon also became known for its horses which were exported all over Europe for use in cavalry units during the Napoleonic Wars. One particular horse that was very popular in Europe was D'Ursy de la Fayette whose name is still used today as a trademark by several horse interests including De Soto Farms Incorporated .
In 1814, the United States acquired the land that is now Massillon, Ohio from the Indian tribe of Shawnees. The town was founded in 1816 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail as a post office on the spot where today’s downtown stands. Massillon quickly became a major transportation center for central Ohio due to its location at the junction of three important railroads. In 1828, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Knoxville, Tennessee to Massillon and it remained so until he left for neighboring West Virginia in 1829. The town also played a role in America’s first presidential election when John Quincy Adams was elected president in 1824.
