Ammunition history in Massillon, Ohio began with the introduction of the first guns to the area in the early 1800s. The first shots were fired from a small cannon called a “Fenway” on Fenway Park. Ammunition for this cannon was brought over by wagonloads from Boston and later by ship. The first powder store in Massillon was built in 1847 by James Henshaw and his son Amos. This store was originally located at Centre Street and High Street. In 1857, J.H. Gunn opened a new store at Commerce Drive and State Road 7 south of town. In 1858, William Henshaw founded the company now known as Browning Ammo Company at First Avenue and North Main Street in town. A fire destroyed most of this building in 1893 but Browning continued business until 1906 when it merged with Winchester Ammunition Company to become Winchester Incorporated (Winchester). One of Winchester’s earliest products was ammunition for shotguns which they introduced into mass market distribution in 1907. In 1911, Winchester Ammunition Company merged with Colt Firearms Corporation to form Colt Incorporated (Colt). From 1911 through 1938, Colt produced nearly all American ammunition including cigarettes, firearms components, explosives and other munitions products used by military forces around the world

In 1836, a company of militia was organized in Massillon, Ohio. The company was called the "4th Regiment Ohio Militia." In 1840, the 4th Regiment Ohio Militia changed its name to the "5th Regiment Ohio Militia." In 1847, the 5th Regiment Ohio Militia became part of the 3rd Brigade in the Union army during the Mexican-American War. On February 14, 1850, the brigade left for Mexico City and fought at Cerro Gordo. On March 14, 1850, when General Zachary Taylor's army crossed over into Texas and attacked Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio de Bexar (later Austin), elements of the brigade under Captain George W. Smith advanced across open ground against heavy fire from two hundred rifles to attack and capture this fortifications; but they were repulsed with loss of four men killed and ten wounded. After successful operations against Confederate forces at Palo Alto on October 9-10 (1850), Major John Cushing assumed command of Battery A of Company G in support of General Smith's cavalry column which had marched from Brownsville to attack Castro’s position at Adobe Walls. At Santa Anna’s forced entry into Mexico City on November 6 (1850), Battery A reached Guerrero Street before being ordered back by order of Brigadier General Donelson to join Lieutenant Colonel James Halleck’s brigade attacking Chapultepec; however battery did not reach fighting position until after nightfall on November 7. For his gallantry during these engagements Captain George W. Smith was brevetted major general United States Volunteers #9609 In 1855, Bartholomew Roberts purchased land east of Massillon in what is now Perrysburg Township from Nicholas Ives for $750 Roberts built a farmhouse there and named it after himself – Roberts' Station
Massillon, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Butler County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,898. The city is about 50 miles (80 km) south of Cleveland on Interstate 75 and lies within Scioto County. The first Massillon settlement was made by settlers from England in 1814 on land that had been part of Sandusky Township. The town was named for Isaac Newton Bulkley, 1st Baron Bulkley, who donated land to the fledgling community. The original courthouse was built in 1838 and burned down in 1892; a new courthouse was erected and completed in 1899. In 1907, Massillon annexed part of Trumbull Township to form its own municipality. In 1951, Massillon became an international center for electronic Commerce with the opening of two major corporations - Dow Corning and TI Research Laboratories - as well as several other companies over time including American Cyanamid Company (now Akamai Technologies), Chiappa Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Honeywell International Inc., Atari Corporation (now Atari Games), Mattel Inc., PepsiCo US LLC and Wacoal USA Holdings Inc.. In 1957-1958, Massillon hosted the world's first annual World's Fair at Portage Lake Park; it remains one of America's most popular tourist destinations today. In the year 1814, when Ohio was part of the United States of America, two men, James K. Polk and Myron E. Johnson, met in a small town in southwestern Ohio called Massillon. They were looking for a place to start a new government and they thought that Massillon would be perfect because it had a population of 1,500 people and it was close to the Mississippi River. The two men founded the government of Ohio on October 7th, 1814 at Massillon. The first president of the new government was Myron E. Johnson who served until 1830. The second president of the new government was James K. Polk who served until 1841. In 1840, Massillon became an American state when it seceded from Ohio and joined Michigan as part of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1857, however,Massillon became an independent city again after Kentucky banned slavery in that state. In 1865, during World War II, Massillon played an important role as one of six Military Supply Centers located along rationing lines in Western Europe due to shortages caused by Nazi Germany’s occupation of Poland and its allies during World War II. For many years after World War II ended, Massillon remained an industrial center with heavy manufacturing including automobiles and other products such as rubber products and paper products before transitioning into service industries such as health care or education over the past few decades
