Massillon is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1811 by Daniel Boone and named for John Massillon, an early settler. It became a city in 1907. The first occupants of what is now Massillon were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around the area where Massillon now stands. In 1811, Daniel Boone and his group of pioneers arrived here from Kentucky to start a new life. They named their new settlement after John Massillon, an early settler who had helped them find their way west. John's elder son James also came to live in the area and help pioneer the town. Over time, other settlers followed suit until by 1830 there were over 100 people living in Massillon proper. In 1837, General Simon Gaddis ordered all Indian nations east of the Mississippi River must surrender or be destroyed. This order caused much tension within the Ohio community as many felt that it would be more beneficial for the natives if they simply left rather than face extinction at American hands. As a result, many residents decided to stay and fight against Gaddis' order when he issued it. Despite this opposition, considerable progress was made on building roads and erecting homes during this time frame - most notably through construction ofpresent-day Business Park Drive which runs along Grand River Avenue just south of Main Street). By 1850, however, enough residual native resistance had developed among some elements within the community that Gaddis again called for all Indians east of the river to submit or be destroyed completely - this time with no pardon offered for those who refused outright (this order actually helped spur heavier Indian raiding into central Ohio). Consequently, local militiamen were called out to suppress any uprising or Resistance efforts as early as January 25th 1850 - making it one of history's earliest documented instances of mass armed conflict between white settlers and natives in America! This fighting continued until May 6th 1850 when General David Twiggs finally ended hostilities by giving all combatants implementing orders not to hurt civilians or destroy property; thus ending more than fifty years of military engagement between colonists and natives – an event which remains significant today due both its antiquity (the Treaty Agreement signed following its conclusion has still not been fully ratified by both parties) as well as its importance given contemporary events (such as recent interactions between indigenous tribes living near Cleveland & Cincinnati)). During these years there were several key developments within Massillon including:1) Increase in manufacturing activity due primarily to increased demand from European markets;2) Expansion into areas such as education & healthcare;3) Growth & success stories achieved by various civic organizations – such as Sunday School/Church services being held at various locations throughout town while businesses enjoyed booming prosperity;4) Formation of numerous sporting activities & tournaments throughouttown;5) Increase in social support systems available for residents wishing to avail themselves thereof – such as volunteer fire departments being formed soon after incorporation while libraries began forming shortly thereafter);6) Establishment of governmental structures including Town Meeting meetings which served both deliberative purposes AND acted as quasi-judicial bodies responsible for providing essential services suchas zoning laws etc.;7) Formation Of The Ladies Benevolent Society (LBS), whose purpose was To provide charitable assistance towards widows / mothersless children residing within village limits etc.;8) Founding Of A Library system comprising 2 bookshelves per room (!);9) establishment Of A School system catering specificallyTo girls only beginning operations circa1850-185110;11; Increase In craftsmanship & trade evidenced by numerous handmade items having become popular especially amongst ladies residingin Village limits during this period12.)
