Mason, Ohio is a town in the Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census. The Mason-Dixon Line runs through the center of town. It is named after George Mason and James Dixon. The first permanent American settlement in what is now Athens County was made by John Fitch on March 17, 1813 when he and three other men set up a trading post on the Scioto River. This early site served as an important transportation and communication hub for both settlers and traders moving between Lancaster County to the west and Cincinnati to the east. In 1815, John Fitch's son-in-law, Jeremiah Dixon arrived from Kentucky with his family and began landowning in what later became Mason Township. Jeremiah had married Fitch's daughter Ebenezer Weatherly (1802-1886). In 1827, Ebenezer purchased of land including what would become known as Main Street in downtown Mason from David Randall (a neighbor of Fitch). This purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of history's most significant retail corridors – commercial streets quickly grew into neighborhoods around central business districts throughout America. The Town Square in downtown Mason was platted in 1830 by grist miller Amos Kendall with help from local farmers who donated their land for this purpose; Kendall also built a two story frame bank building on Main Street which still stands today. One aspect that has been unchanged since 1830 is that main thoroughfare leading south down Market Street from downtown to I-75 bypassing downtown has been called "Amos Kendall Boulevard" ever since – another indication of how important this stretch of roadway was then as it remains today! Emanuel Wirth founded Wirth & Wirth lumberyards on First Avenue near Third Street in 1840 which soon became one of America's largest sawmills responsible for producing more than half a million barrels per day – an unheardof amount at that time! By 1850, over 100 businesses have situated along Main Streets within easy walking distance of each other making it one ofAmerica’s earliest commercial hubs! As economic activity increased along with population growth during this period many new buildings were erected such as churches (the first being constructed on Vine Street), hotels/boarding houses (such as Masonic Lodge #2), schools (including Butler High School) and even stores/factories like Smith & Brothers Clothing Factory on Second Avenue! In addition to manufacturing several thousand barrels per day at Wirth & Wirth alone some landmark products produced by these factories include: Liberty Bonds
