In 1807, it became part of the United States and was named for James Mason, one of American naturalist's first explorers. In 1815, Mason became an incorporated village and in 1907 became a city. The first settlers in what is now Mason were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1795. They built their homes on land that they purchased from the Native Americans. By 1800, there were about 25 households living in what is now Mason Township. In 1801-1802, three men - Joseph Hoadley, Nicholas Clymer and Israel Davenport - constructed a log cabin where present day First Baptist Church stands today.Around this time there were also some traders active in the area who sold goods such as lumber and hides to Indians and other settlers. In 1807, James Masons migrated from Pennsylvania to what is now Mason with his family to start a new life on the frontier of America. He owned around 2 acres of land which he divided into five lots for sale to early settler couples looking for land west of Pittsburgh or east of Cincinnati due to mounting tensions between Great Britain and United States over control over North America at that time By 1830 there were 300 residents living in what is now downtown Mason City while 400 people lived scattered around six villages: Addison (northwest corner), Albion (southwest corner), Blacklick (east side), Clearfield (northwest corner) and Elmira (southwest corner). These villages operated as independent agricultural communities until 1830 when they came under common management with Reverend Hoadley appointed Director General Agriculture for all four settlements At this time there were several schools including one established by Reverend Hoadley himself called "The Academy" which taught children grades one through eight Additionally, streets were laid out within these villages with each town electing two trustees responsible for those streets This gave rise to demand among early inhabitants for more education opportunities outside their home towns . There was also talk about forming an academy like this within East Addison but no action took place until after Reverend Hoadley's death A school inspector known as "The Elder" visited these communities twice during this period to inspect public schools but found them deficient ; however because these inspections did not result in changes much progress was made . The first brick school building erected on Main Street near Elmira Avenue was dedicated on October 3rd , 1834 by Mayor John Witherspoon . It would be replaced by current First Baptist Church just south of Market street later that year heir property becoming College Square
