In 1834, James Kapp established a trading post near present-day Uniontown; this early village would eventually merge with neighboring Delaware to form what is now Kettering Township. Around 1840, Samuel Smith began operating a gristmill which would soon become key to local breadmaking operations; Smith's mill still stands today as a heritage site within Kettering Township limits. In 1850, surveyors noted that there were 10 white families living in Mason while 90 black families lived nearby – proof that African Americans had begun moving into central Ohio since before Removal Day when most residents resided east of Coshocton Creek on Cleveland’s frontier]. Census data from 1870 shows that there were 325 white people living in Mason while 1125 black people lived hereabouts; this represents an increase over previous decades%.
