Mason was founded by John Mason in 1796 and named for him. The town was organized in 1824 after it was chosen as the seat of government for the newly formed Muskingum County. The community takes its name from John Mason who settled there in 1796 and named it for himself: "Johnston's Ferry". He had first moved to this location when he became a surveyor for Lake Erie Township in 1792. In 1824, John Mason's grandson Moses Fenton gave his father-in-law James Hines $6,000 to purchase all of what would become Muskingum County from the Shawnee Indians and rename it "Mason" after himself and his grandfathers James Hine and Albert Parsons (1759–1821). In 1836, during Andrew Johnson's presidency, he designated Mason as site of an experimental cotton gin on the Scioto River due to its strategic location between Cincinnati and Cleveland – two major cities then experiencing rapid growth within their respective states due to new transportation technologies that emerged during that time period: railroads and canal boats through which goods could be transported more quickly than by horse or wagon across open country
