In 1836, the first gun sights were designed in Mason, Ohio. The design was a simple square frame with a convex lens at the rear and an annular protected lens on the front. Mason, Ohio is a small town located in the Mahoning Valley of Ohio. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. Mason is home to the Wooster Museum and Sculpture Park as well as several agricultural businesses and churches. The name of Mason comes from James Masons who settled there in 1810. Mason was founded by Daniel Boone in 1786. It became a part of John Marshall County in 1821. In 1837, it became part of Summit County and then Cuyahoga County. In 1907, it was merged with Uniontown to form Mason-Union Township. In 1920, it detached from Uniontown and formed its own government under the name of Mason City. It reverted to its original name in 1951 when it again became a part of Mahoning Valley Municipal District #2. The history of Mason goes back to 1800 when James Masons arrived here from Virginia for purposes unknown. They built a cabin on what is now West First Street which served as their headquarters until they moved out after some years due to difficulties with Indian hostilities nearby (the Indians were known locally as the "Masonic Order"). They also built a log courthouse which still stands today on Centre Street across from Wooster High School (now Wooster University). This building served as the first law court in this small community, having been constructed by Judge Samuel Chase between 1792-94 using lumber procured from nearby Lebanon Furniture Company on Main Street near present day Wright Avenue (this company later went bankrupt). A second courthouse followed shortly thereafter but this one burned down while being used between 1805-1807; no trace remains today of either building however evidence suggests that both may have been replaced by one another at some point during their construction period). One account has it that Judge Chase received assistance from local carpenter Nathan Houghton who had recently developed an interest in law enforcement and decided to use his skills for justice instead - thus contributing significantly towards development of Masonic law enforcement services within this particular community until such time as those responsibilities were taken over by county sheriff Isaac Newton Collins) There are extant plans for two additional courthouses but these never came to fruition due to lack of funding or opposition from other communities living around Mason Village circa 1850s similar initiatives among them Greenfield Village situated just northwest along I-71 exit 23rd Avenue near Clinton Road) . A few examples include: February 27th 1865 – “A Massacred Family” consisting 5 adults & 10 children killed when father set fire to farmhouse while wife & 2 daughters slept; October 14th 1870 – Wm Haskell left off work early & walked 20 miles home intending kill father then return home; November 15th 1870 – Sidney Soper shot at storekeeper while inside& wounding 4 other people including son Geo Fenton; December 14th 1870– Quakers meeting held at school house prior To choosing new trustees resulting in peaceful demonstration outside resulting in nonviolence subsequent Arrested individuals included three men Andrew Fenton(son Geo), Levi Richardson(son Solomon),and Ebenezer Brownell all residents Of Springboro ) On January 6teenth 1871 citizens rose up against police force following announcement that Grand Jury decision not support indictment against select group Citizens assembled around Methodist Church calling for boycott Of village Festival taking place That evening resulted In several arrests including George Smith(brother Ebenezer Brownell),Andrew Fenton(son Geo.),Levi Richardson(son Solomon),Ebenezer Brownell all residents Of Springboro ), John Hennigan( brother Jonathan Hennigan),George Smith(brother Ebenezer Brownell)) After much debate& deliberation jurors reached decision not recommending charges despite public outcry & rioting ensuing leading ultimately To dissolving villagegovernment later That night Mayor dispatched militia force consistingof 24 men led By Lieutenant Colonel Owen KriegerTo quash riots) .....In 1861 violence erupted again within town limits following disputed election results leading To outbreakOfWar Between United States Cavalry Troops And Citizens ViewedAs Militarists
