Mason, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. Mason was founded in 1814 by James Mason and others as the Town of Manchester. It became a borough in 1902 and was annexed by Cleveland in 1907. After annexation it changed its name to Mason City and then to Cleveland Heights. The current name of the town is derived from James Masons father-in-law, John Fenton Mason III. The first settlers to what is now Mason were farmers who arrived around 1796. A post office was established here in 1814, and for many years the only transportation through the area was horseback riding or walking overlands from Manchester to Cleveland on either side of the Cuyahoga River. Farming declined after 1800 due to new technology such as railroads which brought more goods and people into the area. However, trade with other parts of Ohio began to increase as agriculture dwindled due to technological advances such as farming tools that could be transported long distances without being damaged by rain or ice. In 1814 James Mason organized a group of men including himself, his brother-in-law Matthias Denny, Solomon Northrup and others to petition for incorporation into what would become Butler County; they were successful with help from fellow farmers George Stephenson (founder of the Cincinnati & Dayton Railroad) and Ebenezer Beecher (founder of Beechers Universalist Church). Businesses started quickly forming within this nascent community because there were no banks or other institutions available for dealings outside of their own village square where meetings were held weekly for business decisions made during harvest time or when merchants took note of trends among their neighbors James Masons wife Lydia had married John Fenton Mason II while he lived in Burlington Heights near Strongsville; John had been born there about 1775 although most sources place his dateof birth between 1778-1780 . James Mason Sr., John Jr., Lydia & their children moved back east about 1802 when they found landowning opportunities present at Mansfield on Lake Erie’s western shoreline which lay adjacent to what would become Cleveland They continued farm operations until 1850 but traded much more with easterners than they did with those located westward along Lake Erie . By 1840 most residents in both villages had relocated away from each other creating social barriers that continue up until our present day . In1854 a fire destroyed much part of downtown Manchester so again businesses reestablishment took place out on Euclid Avenue just north of Southgate Road This location served as an important commercial center until 1958 when demolition forced development onto Euclid Avenue again resulting in increased traffic congestion which has negatively impacted safety issues since then
Mason County was formed in 1821 from a portion of Scioto County. The first courthouse was built in 1824, and the county seat was located at Masonville until1836 when it moved to Cincinnati.
