In 1875, Marysville was founded as a small town in the Unorganized Territory of Ohio. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Scioto River and its oil production. By 1907, Marysville had a population of 7,000 people and it became an important manufacturing center for munitions. The city was also home to the United States Military Academy at West Point until it closed in 1921. In 1933, Marysville was named one of five communities in Ohio designated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as sites for training large numbers of American soldiers in physical fitness and warfighting techniques. Because of its strategic location on the Scioto River, Marysville remained an important military base throughout World War II. The city's Arsenal produced weapons such as tanks and artillery pieces used by the Allied Forces during World War II. Marysville is a town in Wood County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. At one time it was the most populous town in Wood County. The first settler in this area was James Miller who arrived around 1790. Other early settlers included William Ketchum and his family and Nicholas Bicknell from England who established a farm on what is now North Fairview Drive in 1807. The village of Marysville, Ohio was founded in 1812 by Nicholas and Anna Maria Grosse. It became a town in 1841. The population of the village peaked at 1,000 in 1850 and declined to 100 in 1900. The town annexed the villages of Slippery Rock and Westfield in 1912.
