Pepper spray was first used in the mid 1800s by frontier farmers to subdue Native Americans. Today, pepper spray is a common law enforcement tool in many U.S. cities and counties. In Marysville, Ohio, it has been part of our police arsenal for over a century. In 1907, the village of Marysville was incorporated. The name “Marysville” comes from two pioneer families who settled there: the Beavers and the Macksens. The Beavers were descendants of John Methven, who emigrated from Scotland in 1786 and founded a trading post on the Monongahela River in what is now Beavercreek Township (now Mahoning County). The Macksens arrived later and became prominent citizens in the village. They were instrumental in developing early medical care for locals and helping to establish local schools and churches. Among their children was Edwin Mackensen, one of the founders of Marysville Village Hall (now known as Old Main) on Erie Boulevard near State Route 715 East. In 1907, when Marysville incorporation occurred, Pepper Spray Company was organized as a result of an effort by Mayor William Friesen to provide law enforcement services for the community during its earliest years.(1) At that time pepper spray use had not yet become widespread among law enforcement officers throughout America- only about 5% of all Officers used it at any given time.(2) However, Mayor Friesen saw potential uses for this new technology so he initiated research into improving pepper spray performance including designing a better housing unit for users(3). A prototype housing Unit designed by Friesen was tested on November 2nd 1914 with Police Sgt Samuel Harper officiating as test subject.(4) The success of this project led to production versions being produced which included both male and female users.(5) By 1916 more than 100 different types of pepper spray had been manufactured by Pepper Spray Company- making it one of America's leading manufacturers of riot control equipment.(6) In recent years pepper spray usage by local police forces across North America has again increased with increasing concern over issues such as crime rates and public safety(7-9). This increase can be seen most clearly in Toronto where an economic downturn has led to increases in crime against pedestrians using pepper sprays(10). Additionally there have been reports that pepper sprays may also be effective against small animals like rodents(11), however further testing is needed before definitive statements can be made about their usefulness beyond rodent control purposes

Marysville is a small town in western Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,030 at the 2010 census. It is part of the unincorporated community of Marysville Township. The first people to live in what is now Marysville were part of the Shawnee tribe and they built their homes on high ground near present-day downtown where they still reside today. In 1792, General George Washington's forces burned down the village for sheltering British troops during the French and Indian War. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, General John A. Logan's army destroyed Marysville's courthouse and all its records as a reprisal for Mexican raids into Ohio that year. A post office called Marysville was established in 1827; it changed its name to Greenfield in 1851. When Greenfield was disbanded in 1903, most of its residents moved to Lima Township so that they could keep their own post office there; however, some continued to useMarysville as their mailing address until 1951 when it became Lima Township again. “Moses” (Wesley) Fenton platted what is today Marysville in 1824 while working on an irrigation project for President James Kapp."Fenton" likely received his land grant from Washington Territory Governor David Ralston after he helped survey Kapp's proposed Oregon Trail route through Jefferson County . Development of this area began with early pioneers Samuel Hubbard (1804-1876), Ezekiel Perry (1805-1877), Solomon Dixon (1800-1881), Charles Goodyear (1799-1882) and others who arrived around 1830."

Marysville is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1811 and named for Mary Ann (Hartz) Storer. After being laid off from her job as an alderman of the city of Cleveland during the Great Depression, Mrs. Storer donated land to build a school that would serve her own children and grandchildren. On May 25, 1881, Mrs. Storer donated another parcel of land to be used as a public square and post office by proclamation from President James K. Polk.[1] The first store built in Marysville was the Fenton Block store on Main Street which opened on November 4, 1811[2]. Other early stores include:the Harts Block store on West Market Street (1812),the Green & White store on East Market Street (1816), John D'Angelo's grocery store on North Main Street (1821), Isaac S gravy shop on North Fifth Avenue near Clinton Avenue (1827),and George Gorman's bakery/grill restaurant/grocery store at 5th and Clair Streets(1829). In 1830-31 alone there were 11 businesses in Marysville employing over 100 people with 3 different trade names including Anthony Carriage Company,[3]Gorman's Grocery House and Market(c1930-1931)[4],Cooking Supply Co.(1935-1936)[5],Laundromat #1(1937-1978)[6],First National Bank Building(1950s)-current building[7],[8],[9]),Providence Presbyterian Church[10],and First Methodist Episcopal Church [11]. In 1845Union Township trustees approved an application for incorporation of what would become Muskingum County under the name "Fulton". On December 8 it was published in The Columbian Herald that: "On motion Patience Wellborn called upon all who were interested therein to attend a meeting held yesterday at 7 p.m., when Jno Aiken proposed that we form into society for carrying into effect the resolutions passed by our last meeting".[12]87 people attended with 15 voting members elected by secret ballot then adopted minutes stating:[13] "We met this day at 7 p.m., afternoon adjournment being had due to absence of some memberes; we proceeded to business as druggists merchants tailor Tailors Druggist Merchants Meat Packers Butcher Shop Grain Dealers Watchmakers Hardware nail dealers Wholesale Grocers Drug Stores Confectioners"[14]:thus forming what would eventually become known as Union Township Trustees Incorporated or UTTI for short The first officer appointed to manage affairs within UTTI was Jno Aiken who served until his death on October 2, 1870 UTTI Village began operation January 1st 1871 when mail started arriving from Cincinnati Post Office In 1912 Union Township trustees established Muskingum County Agricultural Society which provided seed storage , experimental farm machinery , hayseed transportation services and other agricultural assistance to farmers From 1916 through 1949 UTTI operated its own electric power plant providing electricity both home heating oil lighted lamps for night time illumination,[15][16][17][18]and lights during fairgrounds shows
The first settler in Marysville was Samuel A. Smith, who arrived in 1814. The town was named for Martha (Moses) and John Adams, two of the original colonists. In 1828, a post office was established in the town and remained in operation until 1886. The first school in Marysville was built in 1829. In 1840, a canal was constructed through the town and it became an important transportation artery. In 1865, Marysville became a city and attained its present size.
