Marysville was founded in 1828 by John and Martha Smith. The first post office was established in 1829. In 1835, Marysville became the county seat of Lucas County and it remained so until 1911 when it was moved to Myerstown. The village of Marysville started as a small farmstead on the left bank of the St Clair River east of present-day Myerstown. In 1834, John Atherton purchased land from the heirs of Peter Cooper for $200 Atherton built a large house on what is now Main Street inMarysville and named it after himself, "Atherton's Court House". He also developed an agricultural complex that included four stores, two barns, and one blacksmith shop on his property which still stands today. By 1840, Atherton had added several other homes to his estate including ones for his wife Martha (née Cook) and their two young daughters; Annandale (1839-1901), who married James Glasgow; and Eunice (1840-1926), who married Samuel Allyn Jr.. In 1845 Gouverneur Morris visited MarysVILLE while he was traveling through Ohio looking for new candidates for President of the United States Morris called upon Atherton to dinner at his home before speaking with him about running for president that evening Atherton agreed to run but died soon afterward before he could make an impact on politics in America
The town of Marysville was founded in 1792 by John and Susannah Mellon. The community was named after the mountain Mary, which is located in Pennsylvania. The Mellon family ran a grocery store, post office, and school in the town until their death in 1868. In 1903, the town was renamed for General Grant because of his role in military history.
