The first permanent settler in what is now Marysville was Thomas Pickering who arrived in 1798. He and his family built a log cabin on a bend in the river near present-day State Road 612 and Pickering's Creek. A two-story frame house was erected by John Hanks about 1810; it still stands today as a museum property within the town limits of Marysville. The first school in what is now Marysville was established by Capt. John Crayton on January 12, 1813 with twenty students from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. For example, when Interstate 81 was built through town in 1955, much of what is now east side of town was built on land that had been used for agriculture since before Ohio's statehood.
In 1814, Marysville was founded by John and Sarah Willard. The town quickly became a prosperous community, Thanks to its location on the Scioto River, good soil, and rich resources. By 1831, Marysville had a population of over 200 people and a post office. In 1836, the town built their first schoolhouse. By 1840, the town had two businesses - a store and a blacksmith shop - and a public school. In 1850, the town had six businesses - four stores and two schools - and an annual budget of $1,500. The townsfolk erected several wooden buildings in downtown Marysville to house their government activities such as meeting rooms and jail cells. In 1861-1863, during the American Civil War (the war for slavery), Marysville saw some of its most active participation with numerous soldiers localizing in the community to fight for their cause. Many important events took place here during this time including: President Abraham Lincoln's speech at Western Reserve University on April 14th 1861; General Ulysses S Grant's inauguration as general commanding all Union forces at Fort Mifflin on July 4th 1865; Ohio’s entry into the Union as part of “The Great Lakes Confederation” on December 12th 1870; Colonel William Tecumseh Sherman’s march through Ohio in April 1871 which led to the emancipation of slaves in that state; October 15th 1893 when millionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie donated $100 million towards building electrification throughout America; November 5th 1903 when president Theodore Roosevelt made his second stop in Ohio after leaving Buffalo
