When the first pistols were designed in the 18th century, they were not equipped with swivels. The handguns then became popular and requirements for them began to change. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,521 people, 592 households, and 476 families residing in the town. The population density was 99 people per square mile (38/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 2% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%.
There is no one answer to the question of how and when gunswivels became popular. However, there are a few key events that may have helped to spur on their spread. The first firearm with a swivel action was the French musket, which began being mass-produced in the late 17th century. This weapon featured a rotating barrel that allowed it to be rotated around its vertical axis, which made it more difficult for enemies to aim at target. Additionally, this type of weapon was used by militaries in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries as part of an overall strategy called "cavalry warfare." In this type of warfare, horses were used instead of human beings as mounts and as such were vulnerable to direct attack from other horsemen or infantry forces. To protect these troops against enemy cavalry attacks, armies would place artillery pieces near strategic points where they could fire ontoenemy horse units while still able to encamp within range of friendly artillery. With advances in weaponry and armor, however, Cavalry Warfare has become less common and most armies now reliance on infantry units for battlefield engagements. A post office called Marysville was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1851. The town site itself was platted on December 12, 1821 by John Copley and James Wetherbee under an act of the General Assembly of Ohio; it became a Township on February 14, 1823. The first mayor was James Blythe (1824-26). The industrial revolution began to take hold here with tanneries being founded around 1830 and breweries starting up about 1840. In 1875, the first gasoline station in Ohio was built in Marysville and the town developed into an important transportation hub. By 1905, Marysville had become one of the most prosperous towns in Ohio.
