In 1999-2000 Hurricane Tom devastated parts of eastern Ohio including much of Marysville; however little damage was done to either local businesses or homes due to pre-existing zoning regulations which exempted properties located within certainsafe areas from losing their exemption from fire codes requirements during natural disasters .
