The first Europeans to visit Marysville were French traders in the late 17th century who established trading posts on the Scioto River and near present-day Marysville Heights. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne founded Marysville as a military post on the west bank of the Scioto River opposite present day Akron and served as its namesake for many years. In 1825, George Washington International University was founded in downtown Akron by prominent citizens of Akron and Marysville to provide education opportunities for students from eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The university's original buildings were located near where today's First Baptist Church stands on East High Street; however, they moved to their current location in 1928 after being damaged by fire. In 1830, James Kapp purchased land east of town on which he built what became known as Kapp's Mills; it later became one of America's largest spinning mills. The mill produced cotton yarn until it closed in 1957 due to economic factors combined with competition from abroad; however, portions of Kapp's Mill still stand today and are used for research and educational purposes by local colleges/universities such as Kent State University (now Kent State UniversityofOhio), Ball State University, Wooster College and Youngstown State University among others. In 1836–7 John Mapes surveyed much of what is now central Ohio including Marysville Township which he named for his wife Martha Ann Mapes (1793–1856). This area now includes much of North Central Stark County including Kettering and Maumee townships within present-day Marysville Township along with parts of Mahoning County including Council Bluffs county within present day Ironton township adjacent to modern day West Union village also within present day MarysVILLE Township limits Moses Brown helped found Ironton Village in 1870 when he came overland from Stroudsburg PA during an attempt to find new homes for Kansas settlers who had failed to reach Illinois through Black Hawk Road or other routes during that year’s 1840 Census Ironton Village prospered until 1915 when World War I caused a decrease in demand for goods manufactured here so much so that most residents left - only a few hundred remain today . Marysville was founded in 1819 by John and Susannah Keyes as a small town on the Scioto River. The Keyes family farms remain one of the most important industries in Marysville today. The name originated from an early settler's daughter named "Maries" for her father's old home on the Scioto River. In 1881, when Cleveland became a city, Marysville annexed part of neighboring Uniontown to become its new municipal center. In 1886, it became separate again when it amalgamated with two other townships - Sheffield Heights and North Olmsted - forming what is now known as Marysville-Sheffield Heights Township. At that time, township status meant that residents were not allowed to vote in city elections but did have their own representation in Village Council meetings and had access to many municipal services such as fire department and streetlights. The early 20th century was a time of significant growth for Marysville with businesses established at various points along Route 6 including Griggs Furniture Company (now Macy's), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now Pirelli Tire), United States Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal), Cuyahoga County Courthouse (nowistry) and many others which continue to operate today within the limits of this comprehensive commercial district located on Euclid Avenue between State Street and High Street bordering parts of Mentor and Lakewood neighborhoods. One such business establishment which experienced significant growth during this period was Wertheim Bros.' bakery on Lincoln Road just south of Route 6 where founder Grosse Fritsche made his signature brownies beginning around 1915 The 1920 Census counted 792 people living in MarysVILLE while there were 1,793 residents living in Uniontown combined; however this number quickly dwindled over ensuing years as automobile travel ceased to be common among officials and citizens alike who preferred foot transportation options insteaddriven by changes wrought by World War II including increased traffic congestionin addition industrial development expanding beyond agriculture into new areas; nevertheless some evidence remains extant reflecting local pride associated with these times when citizens banded together through organizations like "Clevelanders for Community Service", formed groups like Mothers' Milk drives or staged political protests against tax hikes levied without input from those responsible thereby continuing much pre-war traditions alive today within our community despite challenges posed by 22nd century technologies
The first permanent white settler in Marysville was James H. Weir, who arrived in 1827. Weir built the first house on the present site of the town in 1829. The town began to form when a group of farmers organized themselves to improve their land and purchase supplies for their new community. By 1840, Marysville had a population of about fifty people. The United States government grantedMarysville city status in 1854. In 1865, the Union Army burned down part of the town during an unsuccessful attack against Confederate forces near Marysville. In 1870, William Cady founded the Cady Paper Company in Marysville and started manufacturing paper products there. In 1902, John Durden established Ohio's second brewery, also known as The Brewery at MarysVILLE. At its peak production capacity, Ohio's second brewery employed up to one hundred people and produced more than two million gallons of beer per year. In 1916-17, Cleveland Browns owner George Halas imported large quantities of German brewing beers from Bavaria (the company he later bought) and distributed them throughout his team's stadium across Cleveland using a delivery truck called "the Czech Lady." The popularity of these beers led to increased profits for Halas and helped him build what is now called Halas Hall on Public Square in downtown Cleveland
