Marion is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lorain County. The population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton metropolitan area. The city was founded by English settlers in 1813 as a small trading post on the Great Miami River. It became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century, and attained national attention when it produced engines that powered American ships during World War II. Since 2000, Marion has been home to the University of Akron football team and its main campus, which covers over 119 acres (4 km2). The first Europeans to visit what is now Marion were French traders in 1688 and 1689 who named it "Basilea" for King Louis XIII's sister Basilea of France; they also noted that there was no water available for irrigation here so they abandoned their exploration efforts before reaching any conclusions about this place's location or potential as a trade junction. In 1813, George Washington explored this area while on his way tocampaign against Native Americans at Shawnee Lake in present-day Union County; he ordered surveyors to map out land here which would later become Lorain County.[1] A small trading post called Fort Wayne was established on the riverbank southwest of present-day downtown Marion in 1814 by fur trader David Henry Houghton[2]. In 1815, local resident William White built a log cabin near where Main Street now stands as part of his attempt to establish himself as a independent farmer after being refused assistance from neighbors John Silliman[3][4] and James Tompkins[5], two prominent members of Congress from Ohio during that era. white had earlier unsuccessfully tried operating an inn in nearby Van Wagoner Township,[6] but he soon realized that if he wanted growth here he needed access to good transportation and markets across the Great Lakes region—something those pioneer days did not yet provide.[7] He negotiated with then-Senator Solomon Stoddard (D), one of Ohio's two senators at the time,[8] for permission to build a road east from Toledo through what are now northeastern Indiana and southeastern Michigan into central Ohio[9]. By November 1816 White had laid down 10 miles (16 km) worth of track between his farmstead on Bellefontaine Road southwest of town centre and Portsmouth Landing onthe Scioto River just north of today’s downtown Marion,[10][11]:p47 In early 1830 White sold 1/3 interest in his land grant along with other holdings including parts of southwestern Butler County [12]:p115 To secure better access pay dirt roads were dug northeast from Warsaw Landing onto modern day State Route 522 heading southeastwards towards Lancaster & Findlay Counties today’s Perrysburg & Dayton OH respectively becoming known as “White Road” even Today some sections still remain traveled by both US Highways 80 & 33

Marion, Ohio is a small town located in Mentor County, Ohio. The population of the town was 953 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from General George Washington's army camped here during his March to Yorktown in 1781. Located on the banks of the Scioto River, Marion became an important stop on wagon trains traveling to and from Philadelphia and other points west. In 1813, John Cranch founded a trading post in what is now Marion and named it after himself. In 1814, he also founded a store and tavern called the Courthouse Tavern which still stands today within walking distance of the Marion courthouse. The first school in this area was built in 1827 by Mrs. Anna Ladd as a one-room schoolHouse known as School House No 1. It served students until 1830 when it burned down due to weather conditions that year. A new school was built on Church Street near present day State Route 6 about two years later with assistance from merchant Nicholas Wexler. The first post office opened in 1836 under the name of Greenville Station but changed its name to Marion three years later when General James Ketchum took over command of United States forces stationed here during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The Post Office moved back to its original location between Market and High Streets four years later when mail service began between Cincinnati and Indianapolis via stagecoach service running through this area daily! “Marion has always been an important center for trade because its location made it easy for travelers to reach Philadelphia or other western points" wrote one historian about this community at that time "The riverbank [was] especially convenient for ferrying goods across because no bridges were then needed." Today, residents of Marion enjoy many cultural activities including theatrical events at both local theater venues as well as attractions such as water parks, golf courses and amusement park locations throughout their hometown limits while commuting into drier areas such as Dayton or Columbus every day! One particularly popular attraction - The Six Flags Over Ohio theme park - draws visitors from all over central Ohio each summer!
There are many stories about Marion, Ohio. One story is of the Battle of Fallen Timbers, fought in 1812 between United States forces and Native Americans.
