The community was named after General James Marion, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Senator from Kentucky. The first post office in Marion opened in 1814. Marion is located on the southern bank of the Olentangy River which forms much of its eastern border and borders Dayton to the north and west; Middletown to the south; Bowling Green to the east; Italian Township to the southeast; and Perrysburg to the southwest. The town has several old buildings that are still used for local government purposes: City Hall (1907), Fire Department Station 1 (1896), Police Station 3 (1912), Municipal Court Building (1910), Masonic Temple (1893), Public Library Annex (1973) and First National Bank Building (1920). Other older buildings include an early Methodist church built in 1836 and an early cotton gin erected by Abram Warner around 1800. There have also been recent construction projects such as roads new builds including Second Street which runs between downtown Marion and Perrysburg Mall while Third Street connects downtown with Middletown across from Liberty University's campus

The history of Marion, Ohio can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area that is now Marion was first settled by Native Americans and was known as the Great Lakes region. In 1806, the United States Congress formed a district called Upper Michigan Territory and granted land to the newly formed colony of Canada. This area included present-day Marion County. In 1827, American Revolutionary War veteran James Wilkinson purchased 640 acres of land in what is now Marion from a group of Indian elders. Wilkinson named his new holdings the township of "Marion" after himself and donated it to the local community. The townspeople built their first homes on this land in 1828. Over time, other settlers arrived and more buildings were erected in what is now downtown Marion. In 1850, when Ohio became a state, Marion became one of its original counties. The county courthouse was built in that same year and served as the location for many important governmental functions until it was moved to Cleveland in 1928. In 1907, an express train derailed near downtown Marion while traveling on track owned by Northern Electric Company. A fire started inside one of the cars and quickly spread throughout the train; however, no injuries were reported as a result of the accident. In 1915, president Woodrow Wilson visited America’s East Coast during his presidency and toured both Atlantic City and Philadelphia before traveling on to New York City for AlbanyConvention where he announced his candidacy for US President. On November 3rd, 1916 – two years after being elected President – Wilson traveled from New York City to Philadelphia aboard an open car provided by Pennsylvania Railroad Company’s president Samuel Inskeep for an appearance at University Hall which also served as home base for presidential motorcade operations during his final days in office before inauguration day on January 20th 1917! Today there are several businesses located within walking distance of downtown Marion including PNC Bank (the city's only bank), JCPenney (the city's largest retailer), Starbucks Coffee (the second largest coffee chain in America), MARCO'S Italian Grill & Pasta House (one of America's oldest pizza restaurants), Taxwise (a nationally recognized tax preparation service) - all within easy reach via public transportation or bike riding!
The village of Marion was first settled in 1795. The village was named after General George Washington and the President of the United States, James K. Polk. In 1825, a post office was established in Marion and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Marion opened on November 1, 1829. The present day school building was built in 1902.
