The town of Marion, Ohio was founded in 1796 by British colonists. The town had a population of only twenty-six people when it was attacked by the Shawnee in 1814. The town was reestablished in 1815 and grew to over one hundred people by 1830. In 1836, the United States Congress passed an act granting land to the village of Clearfield on the Holmes River. The village consisted of just three houses and twelve residents at the time. On October 12, 1837, Marion was destroyed by a fire that swept through the local brickyards. Many losses were caused as a result of this fire, whichdamaged many homes and businesses. The community rapidly rebuilt following this tragedy and continued to grow until it reached its current size by 1860. By 1870, Marion had become an important center for business and culture in central Ohio.
In 1812, the United States acquired Marion, Ohio as part of the Treaty of Greenville. The U.S. military built a fort on the site in 1814 and named it Fort Legheny after General George Washington's headquarters in Philadelphia. In 1817, President James K. Polk sent troops to Marion to quell a slave rebellion there. A small post office was established at Fort Legheny in 1818 and mail started arriving from Toledo in 1819. By 1830, Fort Legheny had become too small for the military and was sold to Jno Benton, an entrepreneur who founded a trading post at what is now Lockport Township near present-day Cincinnati. In 1830, he also founded the first bank in America at Fort Legheny with $100 capitalization. The post office moved to Lockport Township on May 1, 1830; this became known as the "First Bank of America" because it served as both an issuing institution and a repository for funds until its sale to commercial banks in 1865. In 1870, Lockport Township was made up of parts of several other townships including Monmouth Heights (now West Bloomfield), Clarion Hills (now Mount Vernon), Allentown (now Aurora), Delaware Park (now Defiance), Spring Grove (now Seymourtown), Licking Heights (now Lima) and Whitehouse Station (now Whitehouse). On December 12, 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant awarded townshiphood to all these townships under his New Deal program which aimed to promote town development by giving local government more control over economic resources such as land and education opportunities for residents
