In 1865, when slavery ended in America, many African Americans moved to Marion hoping to find new opportunities after years living under restrictive conditions in other parts of the country
In 1828, the first white person to live in Marion Township was James A. Mackey. The township was organized on July 5, 1828, and named after General George Washington's home of Mount Vernon. The township had a population of five Hundred and thirty-six people when it was created.
