The town of Evansville rapidly grew during the early 1800s due to its location near transportation Hubs such as Cincinnati and Dayton, along with demand for goods produced in nearby counties. The population reached 1,500 by 1800 and 5,000 by 1850. growth continued through thelate 19th century with mills being built along Ohio River waterfronts around town foribaba (a type of cotton) production; this led to increased flooding which destroyed many homes throughout the county during bad weather seasons.
