The first gun target in Marion, Ohio was located on North High Street. This target was erected by the local militia in 1827. The next target to be located in the town was a stand of locust trees on West Main Street. This stand was destroyed in 1828, but a new stand was erected shortly thereafter. The original target stood for over fifty years, until it was destroyed by fire in 1865.
Dorothy and David Marion were immigrants from Hungary in the late 1800s. They started a grocery store in 1902, and it was one of the first businesses in Marion. Their descendants continue to run the store today. The couple also donated land to help build the city's first public school, which is now located at 111 N High Street. They are enshrined in history as patrons of the Marion Municipal Library. The Marions had four children: Dorothy, David, Johnnie and their sister Ethel. Johnnie died young at age 19 while serving in World War II; his death left an emotional void that was filled by his sister Ethel, who became president of Purdue University’s Board of Trustees before her death in 1984. Dorothy served as library trustee for many years until her retirement in 2003. Her husband continued to serve on the library board until his death two years later. In 2018, they were inducted into the Ohio Heritage Hall of Fame.

Today, Marion is an agricultural community with a population of over 10 thousand people and seven businesses.
In 1807, the United States surveyed and claimed land in present-day Marion County, Ohio. The area was divided among the United States as part of the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. In 1821, a township was established at what is now downtown Marion. A post office was established there in 1830. By 1840, a village had been organized at what is now downtown Marion. The first school in Marion Township was built in 1851. The town incorporated on October 1, 1868.
