Marion, Ohio is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Marion Township which was laid out in 1836. The first settler in Marion Township was Abram Miller. In 1837, he erected a log cabin on the site of what is now downtown Marion. He and his wife lived there until 1840 when they moved to what is today Fairview Heights. The first post office in Marion was established in 1841. It changed its name to Marionville in 1847 because it had become too difficult for people to find an existing township name that would sound English. By 1860, all of the townships were consolidated into Lucas County and Marion became one of its six villages (the others being Allentown, Brookline Village, Eastpointe Village, Lebanon Village and North Lima). In 1888 the village had 1,500 residents and it became a city on December 15th under Mayor John Fenton with Aldermen Jens Hesselgren and George Wirtz as its first mayors. The city limits grew by annexation each year until 1911 when they reached their present size with a total population of 27,545 on May 14th when they merged with the neighboring city of Portsmouth to form the new City of Portsmouth/Marion Combined Statistical Area
