Marion, Ohio is a small town in the United States. It was founded in 1814 by Jeremiah Carden and his family. The population was 5,596 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel John Marion. It is located in the Mentor–Wolverine County metropolitan area. The first settler in Marion was Jeremiah Carden, who came to the area from Pennsylvania in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the Maumee River and named it "Carden." In 1825, he married Rachel Weedwood and they moved to what is now Union Township. They had two children: Samuel (1826-1892) and Electa (1829-1905). In 1830, Carden erected a log cabin on land that now forms part of downtown Marion. He called it "The White House." When he died in 1838, his wife inherited his cabin and continued to live there until her death in 1865. The building still stands today as part of the city hall complex on Market Street between First Avenue and State Street. In 1840, Jeremiah's son Samuel purchased the white house from his mother for $500 (). Samuel rebuilt it into a one-story frame structure with blacksmith shop inside and used it as his home until 1850 when he sold it to Solomon Hodge Sr., also from Pennsylvania. A few years later, Hodge bought another white house next door for $1,000 (). After several more transactions over the next ten years or so involving different owners of these houses – some good citizens and others convicted of crimes – Downtown Marion finally came under control of its own government with Solomon Hodge as its first Mayor () on December 1st of 1860 (). This event marksoneofthe earliest instancesofcivilgovernmentinAmericaandmarkedthebeginningofwhatbecameknownasDowntownMentorVille(). During this time period too many bootlegging operations took place due to prohibition which resulted in much business being lost by both citizens & businesses throughout townspeople formed an informal committee known as Committee against Prohibition () led by Mr./ Mrs./ Miss/ Mister Prentice (), who resided at 116 S Water St during this time period ; making their voice heard thru peaceful protests (& general knowledge dissemination) within & outside their doors! This gave rise to what we know today as "The Marions" nickname given them because no arrests were ever made related directly thereto...due largely to their effort! And that’s how things stayed pretty much calm during those days! However; prohibition didn’t last forever however local law enforcement eventually caught up with organized crime elements & put an end to all illicit activity once again !! whew! The town of Marion, Ohio was founded in 1801 by General David Wilkinson and his wife, Sarah. The village was named after Mrs. Wilkinson’s maternal grandfather, the Reverend Dr. Samuel Marion, who had also served as a colonel in the American Revolution. The first store in the town was built on Main Street and operated by Joshua Greenhalgh and his family until 1814. The first school in Marion opened on Perry Street in 1816 and taught children from five to twelve years old. In 1821, the village became a chartered township with a population of fifty-one people. On November 3rd of that year, Judge James Tipton granted land to Anthony Brown for the purpose of erecting a school house and burying the dead in consecrated ground at what is now known as Stone Cemetery. By 1830, there were three stores and two churches within the limits of Marion; however, only one post office remained open until 1865 when it was moved to nearby Ketteringville. The townspeople developed an economy based on agriculture which produced hay, cornmeal, flour, beans and other staples for local consumption as well as exports to neighboring towns such as Dayton and Cincinnati. For many yearssvhould be seen around town scattering small amountsof cinders from an oven used for baking goods so that fires could be started without starting a full blown fire which would have destroyed some goods or damaged others stored insidethe oven rsited near where present day Old High School stands today
In 1814, General Rosser decided to move the United States capital from Philadelphia to Toledo, Ohio. The decision was made because of the location's strategic importance as the transportation and capital city for much of Upper America during the early 19th century. The area around Toledo had been under Spanish control for centuries and was rich in resources. The first permanent structure in what is now downtown Toledo was a fort built by George Rogers Clark in 1797. In 1814, General Rosser moved the U.S. capital from Philadelphia to Toledo after discovering that there was no suitable city nearby with enough population and infrastructure to support an American government. After several years of development, however, only a few blocks of Main Street remain today as part of downtown Toledo’s core commercial district following its incorporation into the City of Toledo on July 1, 1907
