A store built by George Weiser in 1830 became one of downtown's most popular attractions for shoppers before moving into new digs at Fifth Street and Elm Street in 1870s when downtown businesses were relocated to make way for a new shopping district that would include today's flagship stores including Macy's (1901), Sears (1911), JCPenney (1920), Kmart (1986) and Walmart (1999). By 1840 there were over 150 settlers living in what becomes Marion County when all but two townships within current-day Marion County were organized into counties: Belmont Township on the northwest side of present-day Cincinnati; Athens Township southeast of Cincinnati;and Union Township along both sides of Little Miami River near where it meets Lake Erie
In 1801, the first white settlers in Marion Township arrived. By 1812, a post office had been established and an early economy based on agriculture was developing. In 1819, the township was organized into a village and by 1830, it had a population of about 100 people. In 1836, navigation on the Cuyahoga River became possible with the construction of the first bridge over that river. This led to increased trade and commerce in Marion Township. The growth of farming also contributed to development in this community; fields were quickly developed for corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables. The Panic of 1837 made conditions difficult for businesses in Ohio during that period of economic turmoil. However, some residents managed to maintain their businesses even during difficult times with ingenuity and perseverance. The township's population continued to grow until 1850 when it reached its peak at around 250 people. However, by 1860 it had declined again to about 120 people because of increasing agricultural production in neighboring townships and poverty among some residents caused by low wages earned from work on farms or as domestic servants.
