Marion, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 61,291 at the 2010 census; it is the 4th most populous city in Ohio and the 9th most populous city in Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. It is also one of two cities in Cleveland with a population over 100,000 (the other being Cleveland Clinic). The area that would become Marion was first settled by German immigrants in 1812. The town name comes from John Marston, who purchased land here from the Shawnee Indians for $5 per acre. By 1836, about 8 miles east of central Marion on Interstate 71, General David Porter had built what became known as Porter's Postulate Store to serve as a market and trading post for local farmers and farmworkers west of Youngstown on Lake Erie. In 1837, Porter donated 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of downtown to create what would become Marion Township; it was named after him and his wife Sarah Emmons Porter. In 1846, when Ohio became an independent state, Marion became its capital; however, until 1907 it was located in what is now Cuyahoga Falls Township. On July 1, 1907 – just four days after Columbus Day – Marion became its permanent capital when Toledo moved from its original location near Sandusky to within walking distance of downtown on Euclid Avenue at First Street NW On November 5th 1935 City Council voted 7-0 to annex part of Unicoi Township due to increasing demand for services within unincorporated areas adjacent to city limits including Strongsville In 1964 City Council approved annexation proposals for parts of Uniontown Heights/Wadsworth Village/Newburgh Heights which included portions of Highland Park

The land that is now Marion was ceded to the United States by France in 1795 as part of the Treaty of Paris after the French and Indian War. French traders had established a small town in what is now eastern Marion County in 1794, and by 1800, there were at least twenty-five businesses operating in the area. The first settler in what is now Marion County was John Brooks, who arrived on horseback from Kentucky about 1800. By 1810, there were more than a hundred people living in eastern Marion County. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson won his famous “losing battle” against British General John Pope at Fallen Timbers Creek near present-day Portsmouth. As a result of this victory, Jackson became president and set out to expand U.S.-Mexico relations by acquiring territory south of the border including parts of Illinois and Indiana. The town of Marion, Ohio was founded in 1817 by the American Revolutionary War veteran and commander of the British forces in North America, Captain James Wilkinson. The town became a national capital of the United States in 1792. In 1801, it was renamed to Columbus after Christopher Columbus.
