The first known settler in what is now Marion was John Purdy who arrived there in 1795. He built a cabin on nearby High Street and named it "Purdy's Cabin". A post office was established at Marion in 1801, and remained open until 1906. In 1812, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry landed his American vessel "Nano" here while touring the Great Lakes area for military purposes. After disembarking his troops, he set ashore at this location for supplies and repairs before continuing his voyage downriver to Detroit via Belle Isle. Upon landing at this location again on July 8th, 1815 he ordered construction of a stockade around present-day downtown Marion to prevent attack by Native Americans during his aborted attempt to cross Lake Erie from Canada

In 1907, Marion became home to the world’s first air-conditioned building when its residents installed central cooling systems. By 1960, Marion had a population of 25,000 and it grew rapidly during the postwar period as jobs were created in fishing and agriculture; however, industrial production declined during the 1970s and 1980s due to decreasing demand for manufactures throughout America.Today, Marion is an agricultural community with a population of only 568 people; however, its history still holds great significance within Ohio history because it is home to several important factories which have contributed significantly to Columbus’ economy over the years: Aon Hewlett Packard Company (HPE), GEICO Insurance Company (GECO), PPG Industries (PPG), Allegheny Technologies Corporation (ALT) and US Bancorp (USB).
In 1812, the area that is now Marion was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1813, the territory was divided into two parts, and Marion became part of the newly created Ohio Territory. On July 1, 1814, Ohio became a state and Marion became its capital.
