The first settler in Marion was John Grimes, who built a cabin on the banks of the Scioto River in 1828. A store and post office were established in 1830, and by 1840 there were five families living in Marion. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two important roadways. In 1846, a schoolhouse and Presbyterian church were erected; also that year a sawmill was founded and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. By 1850, there were 14 homes in Marion with a total population of 507 people. During this time, community efforts led to construction of a water supply system which provided potable water for all residentsstrompulse mills as well as farm animals. In addition to these impressive achievements, it is interesting to note that manyof the early civic leaders including Dr. George Wetherbee (1824-1920), Mayor Hiram Hennepin (1857-1922), Judge JF Prince (1868-1948)and MrsLena Dunhams father connected their personal lives with Marion through social events or involvement with local organizations
In Marion, Ohio, the first post office was established in 1827. The town became a borough in 1868, and it was made a city in 1925. It is now a part of the Cleveland metropolitan area.
