Marion, Ohio is a small town located in the Middletown Township of Butler County, Ohio. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The first European to sight Marion was Captain John Smith on July 6, 1790 while exploring the Great Lakes region for British traders. On July 10, 1806, General David Wilkinson and his Corps of Marines landed at what is now downtown Marion and marched upriver to nearby Fort Washington which they destroyed on July 12th. The site of today's city hall (renamed in 1907 for General George Wright) was founded by Major General Andrew Johnson on October 15th, 1814 as Fort Delaware after he destroyed two French forts within minutes of one another near what is now downtown Marion. In 1863 Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant made a raid into Butler County from Lebanon Heights across the state line into Ohio River Valley and discovered an Indian village at present day Spanish Fork that had been abandoned by its Hennepin band of Sioux Indians led by Chief Joseph Custer about three months earlier when he successfully attacked their traditional hunting and gathering grounds near present day Stoneville Township - approximately nine miles south-southwest of where Marion sits today on State Route 27 just east of US 20 & I-70 exit #5A (the "Marion Turnpike"). After learning that Indian allies were still living amongst them here Grant decided to destroy this village rather than allowing them to fall into Confederate hands - a policy later called "Custer's Massacre". On November 16th 1861 Union Maj.-Gen. Richard Ewell captured Columbus north side along current-day State Route 527 just east of US 20 & I-70 exit #5B after a long siege lasting over four days with almost daily skirmishes with Confederate forces inside and outside Confederate held Fort Delaware; later that same year Union Col.-Gen Jens Ludwig organized 4 regiments numbering 1,500 men under his command from Butler Counties under Brigadier General Augustus Stoneman towards what is now Dayton so as not to cross state lines but instead march through Indiana into Kentucky before reaching Cincinnati via Indianapolis Junction; these troops soon became known as The Reserve Brigade due to their stay behind when most other units continued on towards Cincinnati through Kentucky instead). On May 14th 1865 Union Captured Major Nelson Ayer's Creek Ford southeast of present day town limits northwest of Big Meadows Lake during an attack against Confederate forces commanded by Lt.-Colonel James Longstreet who had evacuated Chattanooga following the Battle Of Lookout Mountain three weeks earlier; Ayer's Creek Ford served as both supply depot & battle ground giving rise to local nickname "The Roaring Fork". A major event that took place in Marion County happened on May 7th, 1868 when General Grant delivered his speech at Fort Donelson near present day downtown Cincinnati . The speech helped rally support for Union cause during the American Civil War and gave impetus to new settlement in what became Marion County . With this new population growth came increased demand for goods produced in Marion County such as lumber, cotton and corn; these industries remain important today despite competition from more recent arrivals such as technology and Manufacturing jobs outside of town
On November 3, 1804, Ohio became the 20th state in the Union. The territory that would become Marion was part of Indiana Territory until it was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1815. On January 10, 1819, Marion County was organized from a portion of Putnam County. The first courthouse in Marion was built in 1824 and was located on what is now State Route 57. The structure served as the county seat until 1902 when a new courthouse and jail were built on State Route 538 east of town. In 1907-8, an addition to the original courthouse complex was completed which included a jail and office building. In 1915, Stonington Township (now called Maysville) was formed from parts of Posey Township and Park Township.
