As of 2010, there were 30,868 people residing in Marietta; 8,752 households, 6,542 families residing within the city limits; and 4 Extended Urban Areas which are neighborhoods outside urban boundaries that have formed from parts or all of Marietta annexation or other growth within City Limits since 2000: "Upper Arlington" - A section located east side of I-675 between State Route 528/Ohio Turnpike exit 3B and State Route 10 East near Arlington High School which became an exurban community after annexation by stafford Township on July 1st 2000 as part as part OF District 7062 (this community includes most if not all unincorporated areas adjacent to Arlington High School). This community has large professional buildings including three hospitals one Level I trauma center MARIETTA MEDICAL CENTER along with many other high powered businesses like Arby's restaurant several major banks etc... Upper Arlington residents receive their water from Weirton Municipal Utility District while their electricity comes from American Electric Power Company

In 1828, Marietta was founded as a small town in Hamilton County by pioneers. The village grew quickly due to its location on the banks of the Scioto River and its access to transportation. By 1840, Marietta had a population of around 100 people. In 1865, the village became part of the newly created Athens Township. In 1892, Athens Township merged with Lawrence Township to form Athens-Lawrence Township. On December 1, 1927, Athens-Lawrence Township lost its autonomy and became part of Middletown Mayoralty District No. 2 which is currently represented by Mayor Timothy J. Flannery (D).
