The town of Marietta, Ohio was founded by the James family in 1810. The townsite was located on the Scioto River in what is now central Ohio. In 1814, the brothers Washington and George James purchased land in what is now Marietta and built a cabin there. Over time, they added more land to their holdings and developed a small community that became known as "The James City." On July 4, 1827, the town was formally incorporated as Marietta Township. The township's first mayor was John Fenton. It experienced growth during the 1830s when navigation on the Scioto River became easier because of completion of the Erie Canal. By 1840, Marietta had a population of around 100 people and it had two churches: one German Lutheran and one Baptist. However, by 1850, only 10 people were living in Marietta while over 200 businesses operated within its boundaries. During this time period also saw significant development at nearby Middletown with construction starting on several large mills including G wheel grist mill (1851), C wheel grist mill (1854), Ohio & Erie Railroad Terminal (1855), Dormont Lumber Company (1857-59), Joplin Lumber Company (1860-61) and others In 1865, following annexation by Michigan from Ohio, Marietta lost much of its commerical activity due to tariffs enacted by that state government. However through industrialization efforts led by George Wickersham - president of Lima Glass Works -Marrittta regained some lost economic ground beginning in 1870s with increased production at local factories followed by establishment of new plants throughout Northeast Ohio During World War II many residents worked for various war industries such as munitions production or shipbuilding; however many homes were destroyed or heavily damaged during both Pearl Harbor attacks on December 7th 1941 and January 6th 1944 Allied bombings which caused extensive damage to downtown buildings In 1946-1947 an eleven acre tract along East Main Street between Third Street and Fourth Street been donated to town for use as a park featuring tennis courts volleyball fields baseball diamonds etc., but due to increasing commercial district activity adjacent developers began purchasing tracts adjoining Central Park until eventually all but one block east of Second Street has been developed into high rise housing developments . The last remaining blocks east of Second street have yet to be developed
