Marietta is a small town in the United States. It was founded in 1811 and named for Maria, an enslaved African girl who died in captivity. The population of Marietta was 9,584 as of the 2010 census. In 1830 Isaac Smith opened a gristmill on High Street near present-day State Route 63 and became one of the earliest settlers in Marietta. In 1836 he built a store on Main Street which remains standing today. The store was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt immediately and continued operations until it burned down again around 1911. Ira Stevens started operating a sawmill and quarry at White Oak Park northwest of present-day downtown Marietta in1848 after buying land from John Sikes (a pioneer settler). The sawmill operated until 1912 when it went out of business due to competition from other mills closer to Detroit; however, some remnants remain today including part of Stevens' original mill building that still stands across White Oak Park Road from Interstate 71/US 12 exit 20A (southwest corner). In 1850 Peter Grosse established Grosse & Sons grocery store at Third Street and High Street which still operates as a grocers store today with two stories high inside an open frame structure dating back to 1907-2008 that fronts onto Third Street between High and Low streets; originally designed as three stories tall with Corinthian columns supporting an arcade roof - although only one story survives above ground level with additions over time (see photo below right).
