The community was founded in 1829 by Peter Marietta and his wife Anna (née Weiser). The name derived from "marietsch" meaning 'a small house with a tree near it'. The first settler in Marietta was George Hanks who arrived in 1831. He built a log cabin on present-day Main Street. In 1835, John Fenton purchased land south of present-day High School and built a sawmill which operated until 1840. In 1846–47, James Witherspoon bought land north of High School and developed it into what is now known as Witherspoon Shopping Center; he also laid out present-day Second Avenue between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. In 1830, Peter Marietta married Anna Weiser who came from nearby Xenia, Ohio. They had two children: John Fenton (1832–1913) who became a farmer and miller in East Liverpool, Ohio; and Anna Maria (1834–1920), who became an artist unlike her mother whose work focused primarily on religious subjects such as paintings for churches or altar pieces that were often done using natural materials like wood or stone instead of canvas or acrylic paint

Marietta, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Marietta Township. The population was 54,638 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Marietta was made by fur traders on May 10, 1788 when they set up camp on a creek near what is now Downtown Marietta. One year later, James Kinsman established a small townsite along the Scioto River east of present-day downtown Marietta and named it for his mother, Marie-Thérèse de Montmorency (1748-1825). The first school in what is now Marietta was built on Euclid Street in 1800 by John Cockerill and taught by Mr. Fenton from Georgetown Female Academy which he had founded two years earlier as an academy for girls only. In 1802, Captain David Ralston surveyed and laid out the town site that would become downtown Marietta with land given to him by Pierre Antoine Cadillac (1763-1837), one of French Canada's major land speculators who had brought over large quantities of sugarcane to be grown in America during the Louisiana Purchase. The original plat included four blocks north of Euclid between State and Market streets; today's Fourth Street south of Market streets forms one half block of this original plat area which still remains a key element in downtown MARIETTA! Downtown Mariettta quickly became an important commercial center due to its location close to river traffic and its easy access to transportation including roads and railroads that led into central Ohio or into Pennsylvania or New York City! In 1822, Captain Schaeffer purchased 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of downtown MARIETTA from Cadillac for $4,000! This gave MARIETTA jurisdiction over most of present day Delaware County including Upper Arlington/Centerville until that county was organized as Lucas County in 1827! By 1830, many factories had been erected around Downtown Mariettta such as Lyon & Clark's livery stable where millions worth Of shoes were shipped each week during the early 19th century Despite some challenges – such as fire damage done to several buildings during flooding caused by heavy rains – Downtown MARIETTA continued to grow rapidly throughout much of the 19th century becoming known as "theManchesterofamerica!" Alliant Manufacturing Company occupied much space within SEVENTYTWO blocks OF DOWNTOWN MARIETTA from Warren Street eastward until it moved out in 1984!!! By 1905 all but ONE store remaining within SEVENTYTWO blocks OF DOWNTOWN MARIETTA closed!! Many residents left because railroads came through towns closer to Cincinnati or Cleveland making manufacturing jobs available elsewhere while continuing service for their stores!! Today there are still traces remaining from ALL OF THESE LANDMARKS IN THE GRAVEYARD OF DOWNTOWNMARIETTA TODAY… show me just one thing
