On January 1, 1839, Marietta's incorporation as a town came into effect when its citizens voted unanimously to become an incorporated village under section 9 of the township act of 1840. At that time there were only six residents living within limits laid out by their founders: Nicholas Hoeffer (director), Elisha Dickinson (builder/editor), Wm Smeaton (gentleman farmer), John Coker (farmer/counselor), Ebenezer Dickey (steamboat captain/contractor) and Solomon Willard (laborer). During World War II much of what is now downtown Marietta was leveled for use as artillery shells during battles fought around Niagara Falls; this included entire blocks between Main Street and Elmira Avenue east of Market Street which are still visible today on either side of Elmira Avenue north of I-75 exit 14A
