Gun targets have been a part of the Marietta community for many years. It is no secret that target shooting is a popular pastime in this small town, and there are plenty of places to find them. There are state-of-the art ranges and trap ranges located throughout the town, as well as local gun clubs that offer memberships and discounts on shoots. One of the earliest Gun Targets in Marietta was established by J.F. Smith in 1907. At that time, target shooting was a relatively new sport and Smith was the first person to attempt to make it an annual event in his community. He did this by setting up a 4′x8′ field at his home which could be rented out for $5 per person per day (that’s $100 back then). The event continued annually until 1948 when it stopped due to World War II efforts being conducted within the town limits. The next set of Gun Targets were established in 1951 by Mr. & Mrs. Daugherty who also operated Ranges 2 & 3 on Gadsden Street adjacent to their home (now known as Jim’s Place). This location served as both a ground zero for shootin’ matches and also allowed membership drives and other functions such as sale of shotguns/ammunition from April through October each year! On November 1st, 1957, Mr. Daugherty passed away suddenly after a long battle with cancer; his wife took over management of Target Tumbling Foray until he could take care of himself again some time later in 1958 “ During her tenure she organized numerous charity events including much needed blood drives during typhoon season! It wasn’t until 1978 when Mrs….Daugherty decided it would be more fun if they started charging $5 per person/$10 per team instead of giving out free tickets each year? She went ahead and reorganized all proceeds from collection plus donated any extra money left over back into her husband’s Charity Trust specifically intended for shooting purposes!!! The event has continued annually ever since!! !!
