The museum is dedicated to his memory and contains exhibits about his life and work as a journalist. The Safes at Joe Rosenthal Museum were built in 1977-1978 by Bob Larkin of Lima, Ohio. They were designed to protect journalists working on assignment inside the White House during the Nixon administration. The safes were made out of heavy duty steel and had two layers of stainless steel mesh on top to prevent unauthorized entry. The first safe was used by then-President Richard Nixon and his Press Secretary Jay Carney when they went into office on January 20, 1977. It was also used by then-Attorney General Elliot Richardson when he met with reporters outside Attorney General John Mitchell’s home on February 17, 1977. In early 1978, President Jimmy Carter ordered all American embassies throughout the world to build similar safes in order to protect their diplomats against terrorist attacks or espionage activities emanating from abroad (Carter memorandum No United States Embassy Security Program). Consequently, Bob Larkin redesigned and rebuilt his safe for use at the Marietta embassy (referred to as “theitarnoon”). In addition to its use at Marietta embassy, this safe also served as a prototype for other U.S embassies across the globe that followed suit (these prototypes can be seen at The National Archives collection located adjacent to The Joe Rosenthal Museum).

Marietta, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Franklin County. The population was 792 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-smallest city in Ohio and one of its twelve rural counties. Marietta is located on the eastern edge of Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area, about south of downtown Cincinnati and east of Dayton. The first permanent settler in what is now Marietta was Nicholas Swayze on October 10, 1810. He built a cabin near present day Third Street and Main Avenue. A post office called "Marietta" was established in 1811, but no town grew up around it because there were too few people to support one. In 1814, James Kapp founded Kapptown on land he had bought from Nicholas Swayze; this settlement became known as Kappstown after him. In 1830, John Crighton sold land to the United States for $2 million dollars which would form part of Hamilton Township (now Marietta). The township's first mayor was David Browning who served from 1830 to 1835; John Crighton donated additional land for development including what is now Second Street between Vineyards Drive and Springdale Road (later renamed Livingston Boulevard). On December 5th, 1836 when Hamilton Township changed its name to Franklin County, Marietta became part of that county along with other towns such as Centerville (now Canterbury), Sewardville (now Parma), Shepherdsville (now North Lebanon), Niles Heights (now Hilliard) and Arlington Heights (now Arlington Heights). On November 25th,1887 when Franklin County merged into OHIO due to population growth within both states combined – annexation being offered by both states – Marietta became an incorporated village with a Charter dated October 3rd 1888 under Mayor H W Moody; this charter limited civic powers until May 1st 1912 when they were extended further by ordinance passed by Village Councilmember J L Whitehurst extending full voting rights to all residents over 21 years old regardless whether they resided in incorporated villages or not.
