Marietta, Ohio is a small town in the United States that is known for its apple orchards and cheese. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Lawrence, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Marietta were French traders who landed on the banks of the Great Miami River in 1688. They named their new village after Marie-Thérèse, princess of Savoy, who had married King Louis XIV of France two years earlier. By 1700, all but one family of French colonists had died from disease or war within a year of arrival. In 1701, Englishman James Robertson established a trading post at what is now Marietta and named itafter himself—Robertson's Ferry became Marietta's first settlement name. In 1714 Indian chief sachem Shawnee attacked and burned down the Robertson post; however, no settlers were killed as a result and development continued unimpeded until 1807 when an act by President George Washington created Geauga County out of part of Richland Township (now Delaware County) to provide land for western settlement. The area now comprising Marietta was originally farmland with scattered huts used by tenant farmers while larger tracts were developed as factories such as zinc smelters and paper mills during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The population in 1907 was 576 people living on 158 acres (69 ha). During World War II, Marietta played an important role as one of America's largest industrial centers thanks to its production of military equipment such as tanks and fighter planes.
