Marietta, Ohio is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated community of Marietta is located in Trumbull County. The first European to visit what is now Marietta was Captain John Stevens on his voyage from England to the Western Hemisphere on October 15th, 1795. He named it "Thalia" after the Greek goddess of beauty, but no one has been able to find any evidence that this actually occurred. In 1812-1813 an act of Congress made Trumbull County a part of the new state of Michigan Territory. As part of this change, Marietta became its seat and began to receive mail from Detroit as well as other parts of Michigan. Marietta's post office opened in 1868 when it was moved from neighboring Mentor. It operated for sixty-six years until it closed on December 12th, 1951. It reopened on January 2nd, 1961 under the name "Marietta". The present day USPS store building (renamed "The Depot" after the acquisition by American Express) served as the post office until May 1st, 2006 when MARIETTA GAS COOPERATIVE LOCALITY NOVEMBER2006 - A LOCAL MARKETPLACE AND EATING destination open to residents and visitors alike - opened at 501 N High Street in downtown Marietta with a gift shop inside which features local products and items made in Marion County
