In 1850, Marietta also became home to America's first hydroelectric power plant which produced electricity from water diverted from two streams running through town - one near West First Street and Oneonta Avenue, while another ran along Elm Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue north of Market Square. The plant operated until 1913 when it was replaced by a more efficient gasfired facility that still exists today as part of Union Township Municipal Utility District No.. 2." During World War II many factories closed due to lack of war production; however some small businesses continued to operate such as Wernher Bros., dry goods store, bakery etc.; but most shut down around 1945 because there were no new war contracts or materials available for them to produce/export." When township residents voted in 1984 to annex larger parts of Union Township including portions eastward on Delaware Road including present day Marietta proper - they did so knowing that this would create job opportunities for their community members who had roots here dating back several generations."
