Marietta, Ohio is a small city in the northeastern part of the United States located on the Cuyahoga River. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton County and home to Central State University. The area that would become Marietta was first settled by Shawnee Indians in 1795. The town was named for Maria LaVista de la Costa, one of many Spanish colonists who arrived in what is now Ohio in 1788. After years of being a village, Marietta became a town on November 3, 1821 when it granted voting rights to all its residents over 25 years old. In 1863, after American forces burned down an Indian village near present-day Marietta and destroyed everything save their game preserves, the town's citizens passed a resolution condemning the burnings and pledging to rebuild as soon as possible. In 1907, when Cleveland Municipal Airport opened, three miles (5 km) north of downtown Marietta proper on what is now Delaware Avenue), local farmer Wm. Gifford donated land for an airport terminal and hangar. The airport served as locals' primary access to transportation until 1975 when Interstate 71 replaced it as Marietta's main street artery. On July 1st 1998 - just days after establishment of RTA bus service within central Toledo - City Council voted unanimously to establish MARIETTA TRANSIT AUTHORITY with jurisdiction over all MARIETTA buses including those operated by Greater Toledo Transit Authority (GTCA). On September 15th1998 MARIETTA TRANSIT AUTHORITY took over operation of all Toledo-area Regional Transit Authority (RTA) buses operated by GTCA; this included service from Delaware Avenue Terminal until just before closure on December 12th 2000 due to budget cuts at RTA; only buses that had been retired or mothballed before then continued operating under new names/renaming through December 12th 2000: "Cleveland-GMC Express" & "Mariettta Area Regional Transportation Authority". This change allowed MARIETTAridor services within Downtown Toledo limits which were previously served by Greater Toledo Transit Authority buses while also providing consistency across different operators between different terminals throughout downtown Toledo ensuring timely service despite large variations in routing patterns caused by configuration changes made during cease-fire negotiations between RTA and GTCA following Aliquippa Warrants #1 & #2 . This arrangement lasted until January 2nd 2001 when operations reverted back to GTCAoliath mode with only Downtown Toledo services continuing under new name/renaming: "Toledo Metro"
