By 1850, however, it had grown rapidly to over 100 residents thanks to arrivals from Kentucky (then part of Virginia) and Tennessee (then part of Alabama). At this point in its development, Mariétta was known as one of America's most important manufacturing towns because it produced goods such as bricks and tiles; shoes; saddles; wagons; carts; locomotives; ovens; furniture; glassware etc. It also developed into one of America's leading agricultural communities because it played an important role in cultivating crops such as corn, beans, potatoes etc.; processing these crops into food products like flour or meal; selling these products locally or exporting them abroad/to other countries? On January 1, 1830, the city of Cincinnati annexed Marietta as a part of its boundaries. The first courthouse in Marietta was built in 1830 on the site of the present-day Smith Center Library. The current building opened in 1951 and is located near the Square at Five Points shopping district on Fifth Street. On November 15, 1860, during American Civil War conflict, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived athens to surrender with his army after being elected governor of Georgia by a narrow margin over Union General John Pemberton. His army stopped at Athens for supplies before continuing on their way north to Richmond. In 1861-1865, Athens served as Confederate Army's provisional capital under general Nathan Bedford Forrest until it returned to Union control following Forrest's defeat at Chickamauga Creek on September 3, 1865. In 1865 when Ohio became a state following the end of the American Civil War., Athens became the new state capital and remained so until 1911 when Toledo replaced it as Ohio's permanent capital
