The Marietta area was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Northwest Territory under the British government from 1783 to 1800. The United States acquired it as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In 1825, Ohioans founded a village at what is now Marietta, and in 1830, a town. The village soon dissolved into small villages until it reverted to a township in 1836. In 1907, Marietta became a city and has since grown rapidly with population estimates reaching over 100,000 by 2006.
