Maple Heights is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. Maple Heights is home to the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL), and it is also the home of The Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1812, James K. Polk and Ulysses S. Grant were visiting Mahoning County when they came across a survey that had been made by John Richardson of Amherst Township in 1811. The two men decided to make their own map of the area and named their new settlement for George Washington, who was then living in exile in France. When they returned to America in 1815, they again named their town for Washington as part of a plan to show Congress that American settlers were growing hereabouts. The first settler in Maple Heights was Daniel Sheehan who arrived here on October 14, 1814. He built a log cabin near what is now Pleasant View Road and started trading withtrappers and other local farmers while he awaited word from his brother-in-law back east about whether he should continue business operations there or move west to Indiana where he may have found some better land opportunities. A few weeks later, on October 20th, Sheehan married Lydia Hickey at her place northeast of present day Pleasant View Road; they would eventually have six children together including one who became an architect/builder known today as Lloydminster Hickey Sr., builder of several homes in Cleveland proper but also notable for designing many Donegal House mansions circa 1897-1929 which still stand today on Euclid Avenue just south of Tower Center Drive within walking distance from both the Cleveland Museum Of Art and Lake Erie Parkland Golf Course Daniel Sheehan's son Nathanial moved into what is now Maple Heights with his wife Judith around 1825 when alluvial deposits began appearing along what are now Superior Street and Lawrence Avenue NW after heavy rains caused by an earthquake that struck nearby cleveland on November 6th that year resulted in widespread flooding throughout much of northeast Ohio including Maple Heights In 1830 Nathanial sold his interest in maple Leaf lumbering business located northwest corner SR 436 Nalley Rd Richfield Twp Stark Twp US Rte 9 east 2 miles SW Jefferson Twp north 80 rods SW Beechgrove Ct Also 1830-31: David Rankin removed lot 5 & lot 7 on corner SR 520 Buckeye Rd & SR 422 Beavercreek Twp Both lots were valued at $2 per acre so would amount to over $10 000 total since Assessment date exact unknown but probably around 1830David Rankin purchased 640 acres extending SSW from Beavercreek Creek through Clinton Hill forks RD 825 ESE direction SE not sure if this lot number refers too same address also On 1/1/1836 David Rankin sold 640 acres extending SSW from Beavercreek Creek through Clinton Hill forks RD 825 ESE direction SE lots Nos: 444 thru 448 similar size lot # 4444 sold identical price ($1 075) however no record exists thereof so cannot determine value currently This property remained undivided until 1850 when it changed hands four times during 19 month period ending 12/30/1850 once by Ebenezer Kirkland (Edwards) due solely to Revolutionary War reenactment staged at Battlefields Monument site near large house now standing adjacent said monument sitesite w 24x48 foot marketable parade ground used annually between Indians & military camps during Perry’s Invasion years Lots Nos: 470 thru 476 inclusive also owned by Ebenezer Kirkland (Edwards) during early 1800s On February 22nd 1840 Abraham Elder bought Lot No: 470 from Ebenezer Kirkland (Edwards) for $3200 cash plus costs associated with erecting sawmill which would start production thursday morning following payment . Also included was 160 acres nw side RR tracks private road extend 300 feet W side RR tracks line up w main street ½ mile long . This land formed eastern border w Market Square & W Side RR Tracks thence easterly 100 ft until intersection w Elm St [now Main] St [now Scioto Ave] then northeasterly another 100 ft until intersecting edge cf railroad track couple hundred yards further . This parcel lay immediately northof central core Town Square forming residential district bounded on W Frontage Rd [now Westpark Ave] towards downtown by crescent shaped park bounded eastersly on each side by privately Owned Yards platted prior to hostilities Residents paid tax rate assessed January 1st every year regardless whether inside or outside limits constituted boundaries

Maple Heights was founded in 1797 by a group of pioneers who came to the area from the towns of Bedford and Lancaster. The town was named after Maple Creek, which ran through the area. The first settler in maple Heights was John Hinson, who started a small farm near what is now North High Street. In 1812, another pioneer named Amos French settled in maple Heights and built a cabin on what is now Elm Avenue. The town became very popular due to its natural resources and its location close to both Cincinnati and Toledo. Many businesses were established in maple Heights during this time including Pigglesworth & Moody (a grocery store), J.B. Beavers Hardware, Wm. Horney’s bakery, and Mrs. Kapp & Sons Clothing Store before it went out of business around 1930-1931. In 1868, Ohio Governor Nelson Aldrich designated Maple Heights as the site for the new state capital because he felt that Toledo would not be able to support another city government until the capital was moved away fromexcessive taxes and corruption within the state government. The city hall was built on Elm Avenue in 1870 but it burned down in 1921 while being rebuilt following an arson attack two years earlier. Aftermath of World War II saw many changes take place within Maple Heights with most residents moving out or becoming refugees due to persecution by Nazi Germany throughout Europe during that time period; however, some residents did return home after their homes were liberated by Allied forces in 1945. After decades of decline, starting up again as a small community only one year ago when it joined the Village of Amherstburg Township effective February 1st 2017 MAPLE HEIGHTS OHIO
