Maple Heights, Ohio is a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, just east of the city of Cleveland. The population was 1,535 at the 2010 census. The community was named for the maple tree that stands in its center. Maple Grove Baptist Church was founded in 1868 and became one of the first churches in Cleveland. It remains an active church today and is home to a museum about early Brownsville settlers. Maple Heights also has a post office from 1872 until it closed in 1911. The area around present-day Maple Heights was once part of what is now Mahoning County. When Mahoning County was formed on March 15, 1815, it included all of present-day Mahoning Township as well as parts of six other townships: Ashtabula, Bedford, Inkster, Mayfield, Trumbull and Wyandotte counties were combined withMahoning Township to form the new county. In 1830 Wm E Richardson began draining land near present day Maple Heights for an canal called the Cuyahoga River Canals Company Canal which would connect Lake Erie to Cleveland Bay through Cleveland and Akron Counties; however this project failed because investors did not want to pay for such an expensive engineering feat (Richardson lost interest after his death). In 1833 Richardson established a gristmill on the edge ofpresent-day Maple Heights opposite Springvale Cemetery; he named it Richardson Mill after himself (it still operates). The mill produced flour for local families until 1902 when milling operations were moved to Tallmadge Township due to increased competition from industry in postwar America. A sawmill on Cedar Lane operated from 1865 until 1922; it manufactured lumber for local homes and businesses along with some finished products such as automobiles and furniture. A two-story brick schoolhouse built between 1870 and 1875 served as both a school house and barn before being sold off in 1901 to John J Fellows who turned it into a storeroom used by his sons John Julius Fellows Jr., John Augustus Fellows III & Newton Follett Follett Jr.. This structure still stands today next door to First National Bank building across from Park Hill United Methodist Church on Cedar Avenue NW corner Park Road NE .
