The name Maple Heights comes from the word "maple" and "heights," meaning high ground or mountains. The first settlers in what is now Maple Heights were farmers who came overland from Canada in 1837. They built their homes on high ridges of land that overlooked the then newly founded city of Canton. The community soon became known for its delicious maple syrup, which was used to flavor many dishes during those early days. Today, Maple Heights still produces some of the best maple syrup in all of Ohio! In 1881, one of the first grocery stores in Canton opened up at 221 Genesee Street. That store quickly became a favorite among residents because it carried everything they could need for groceries and more: fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products, baking supplies, etc. Over time other stores followed suit and today there are several large chains operating within walking distance of most residents! During World War II almost everyone left town to serve in military duty; only a few returned home after the war ended. However, when things calmed down again people began to come back to live again and continue their businesses as before - this Ganglion Valley Business District was formed! In fact much later another landmark building was added to this district – The Summit Place Mall – which remains an important shopping center for locals and visitors alike!
Maple Heights is a village in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Township Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was platted on March 30, 1836, by John L. Smith and James Sutherlin. The name is derived from the maple tree that stands near the center of town. Maple Heights was originally part of the Scioto Township area and was annexed into Springfield Township on May 20, 1912. On November 15, 1915 – two days after World War I ended – President Woodrow Wilson delivered his last State of the Union address from the Capitol Rotunda in Philadelphia before returning to Washington D.C., via train to Columbus Circle in New York City for his inauguration as president onJanuary 20th - Big Apple residents naturally turned their attention towards this capital city due to its proximity and large population (Philadelphia had over twenty thousand people while Columbus Circle had only six hundred). In honor of Mr. Wilson's visit Maple Heights erected a large stone monument located at High Street and Maple Avenue which still remains today as one of town's most popular attractions Smithers bakery opened its doors in 1954 and continues to serve as a local legend with many customers claiming they have never been disappointed with anything Smithers has cooked up - even if it has been all offal!
