Eventually, Lennon became proficient in shooting pistols from close up and began to experiment with firing pistols at high speeds called "gunplay." This style of pistol shooting is now commonly referred to simply as "pistolslapping" or "gun play."

In 1793, General George Washington passed through on his way from Paris to Lexington, Kentucky; he stopped at Maple Heights and recommended that the local farmers plant more potatoes because they would be harder to track down as war unfolded over Europe. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army crossed the Canadian River and moved into what is now West Virginia; when he reached Maple Heights, he told its inhabitants that they should stay put because "the enemy is marching right along our borders". The community acquired its name from John Quincy Adams who was U.S. Representative from Massachusetts during the War of 1812 and later became President James K. Polk's Vice President. Adams had been born in nearby Newark but spent much of his childhood in Boston because his father took him there as an infant for health reasons (Adams' mother died when he was two). When he succeeded to Congress after John Quincy Adams' death in 1824, he decided to move back upstate where it was easier for him to get around by horseback so he could better serve his constituents on Capitol Hill than living in one spot all the time like many legislators did then or do today. Adams also made a donation of land at Brunswick Square which served as Maple Heights' first courthouse and schoolhouse (now known as Ashland Community College). due to this donation, maple leaves were flown into town on Memorial Day each year until 1893 when a new courthouse was built just north of town across Pemberton Road from where Main Street meets Delaware Avenue.). As early as 1800s some homes/buildings were being erected on what are now Baldwin Road east of present day Cleveland Boulevard: such home/building include “Fenway” built by Drury & Fenway prior to 1800 while post office still used Fenneway House 2-story white Frame house with 3 large rooms upstairs on bank side facing BaldwinsvilleRoad& attached stable with 2 barns(one newly added)& 1 outhouses attached rearward onto lot wagons brought goods by river canal train weekly Sundayloads for market Saturday afternoon arrived home late Fridays night & unloaded goods Monday morning without any trouble got no tax bill despite having nothing inside house! By 1830 lots had grown enough so Post Office moved several blocks SW corner of present day Baldwin Rd./Pemberton Rd.(completed1830) renamed Cumberland AveSW after state capital Lansing
