The village was founded in 1836 by John Clements as a farmstead on the east side of Maple Creek. Growth began on the west side of Maple Creek, where farmers built homes and churches in the 1840s and 1850s. By 1870, Maple Heights had developed into a small town with a population of 1,500. In 1898, maple sugar became one of America's leading exports after being discovered near Cleveland by George Sylvester Morse. The discovery led to an influx of investment and development in Maple Heights that helped its population grow to 10,000 by 1910. During World War I, many American soldiers were stationed in Germany; some stayed for years before returning home to their families back at home. As a result, many businesses closed down or relocated within Maple Heights during that time period including two banks (the First National Bank and The Citizens Bank), two milliners' stores (Evelyn's Millinery and Mary Griggs' Millinery), four grocery stores (Oscar's Grocery Store, Mrs. Wigglesworth's bakery/canned goods store/grocery store, Herrick drugstore/laundry supplies), three breweries (The Benziger Brewing Company, United Breweries Ltd., Midland Brewing Company) as well as several nightclubs such as "The Cotton Club" which opened in 1911 and closed in 1951; "The Annex" which opened in 1916 and closed circa 1973; "Dollar Bill Saloon" which opened circa 1912 but closed circa 1975; "Hollywood Nightclub" which opened circa 1919 but closed circa 1983) - all located on stately streets lined with large trees throughout most if not all sections of township including main drag Elm Street running north-south through center village with smaller streets branching off it going east-west along its length - making it like living inside an art gallery!. Most residents engaged in agriculture or services related to agriculture such as manufacturing eggs or selling milk while others worked for local businesses such as post office etc.; some also operated their own independent businesses doing what they did best: grinding cornmeal for flour into meal or baking products from scratch...a skill passed down from both fathers generations who did this together until marketing got involved around 1940 when mills started churning out pre-packaged foods.(National Archives Records Administration Microfilm Publication M3827 item 5). Today Maple Heights is considered an upper middle class bedroom community complete with high schools serving kids up through college age & multiple shopping malls nearby providing everything needed for those seeking success beyond just farming skills!

The community is located in Ashtabula County on the border of Ashtabula and Trumbull counties. The town was originally named for the maple tree which stood near where it now stands. The first post office opened in 1837, and the first store was built in 1840. Maple Heights began to grow rapidly due to its location and natural resources, with construction of roads and businesses beginning shortly thereafter. By 1850, Maple Heights had a teachers' training school, a Methodist church, a Masonic Lodge, two banks (one national bank and one Agricultural Bank), four schools (one public and three private), nine stores (one grocery store and eight feed stores), six residences (four single family homes and four multi-family dwellings), two churches (Methodist and Baptist) as well as several mills including the Valley Wheel gristmill which ground wheat into flour for local consumption until 1865 when it became an alternative power plant for Trumbull County . In 1868, Maple Heights incorporated as a village under the name Northwood Village. In 1901, Northwood Village merged with neighboring Ashtabula to form Ashtabula Township . In 1935, Maple Heights became an unincorporated community again when it amalgamated with nearby South Grafton . The city of Cleveland annexed portions of Ashtabula Township in 1907 following its incorporation into Cleveland; however annexation did not include parts of Maple Heights proper though some residents still retained their ownhomeownership there until 1970 when all homeowners were forced to surrender their properties to city control through eminent domain - this operation remains controversial to this day among many locals who feel they were unfairly deprived of their right to property ownership while others maintain that they received no fair consideration from Cleveland authorities
