The first settler in Maple Heights was George Washington Morrison on July 12, 1814. He and his family were working on a farm near present-day Mahoning Valley when they discovered rich coal seams under the ground. They mined the coal until 1827 and began to build a home around it as early as 1829. The Morrison's daughter, Mary Hargrave Moran (1830-1909), became one of the first women to be admitted to West Liberty University in 1914 and she remains an alumna to this day. In 1876, John Copley bought land north of Maple Heights from Amos Seawright for $2,000 cash which he resold three years later for $10,000 more. Copley named his new community after General George Washington during the American Revolution with the hope that people would remember him while living there. The name Maple Heights is derived from the name of a large maple tree that grows near the town's center. By 1820, there were ten settlers living in Maple Heights; four of these were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. Maple Heights remained rural until the mid-19th century when an influx of workers made agriculture more important in the community. In 1830, John Husted settled on what is now Delaware Avenue; he became one ofMAPLE HEIGHTS' earliest residents and built his house on land that today forms part of the eastern edge of Maple Heights Park. In 1836, David Fenton bought 2 acres (1 km2) east of where Husted had lived and erected a small farmhouse known as "Fenton's Farm". That same year, MAPLE HEIGHTS incorporated as a village under the name "Oak Hill". Maple Heights was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his family. The community was named after the maple tree that stands near the original home of the Washington family. The first store in Maple Heights was built on High Street in 1847. In 1865, a post office was established at Maple Heights and it remained in operation until 1974. The first school in Maple Heights was opened in 1868 and it remains operational to this day. There are also several churches located within the community, including First Baptist Church which is located on High Street, and Methodist Episcopal Church which is located on Leonard Avenue.
