The community was named for the maple trees that were common on the town's property along the Scioto River. The first settler in Maple Heights was John Allen who arrived in 1800 and built a cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. In 1815, another pioneer, James Caldwell, also built a cabin near what is now South Park Street. By 1840, there were ten settlers living in Maple Heights. In 1849, John Hanks bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from Samuel Gibbs and began to build a gristmill on what is now Mill Road. Hanks' mill became known as the Hanks Mills and still stands today. In 1861, Mapleton Township was organized and Maple Heights became part of it. The first post office was established in Maple Heights on October 15th of that year; it was called "Mapleton". On November 5th of that year, an act to create township trustees placed Maple Heights under the jurisdiction of Mansfield Township due to its proximity to Mansfieldtownship Lake which then belonged to that township. On May 1st 1902 – one hundred years after its incorporation – Maple Heights had a population of 2,646 people when it amalgamated with neighbouring townships: Aliquippa (1902), Arlington (1903), Beechcroft (1904), Bolton (1905), Butler (1906), Colonie ( 1907 ), Cummingville-Richmond Hill-Mansfieldtownship( 1908 ), Euclid ( 1909 ), Harrisonburg-Harrisonburg Township( 1910 ), Hiram-( 1911 ), Knoxville-Springboro-( 1912 ), Maumee-( 1913 )and New Albany-( 1914 ). On July 1st 1934 - seventyfive years after its incorporation - all but one street in downtown were renamed after generals or political leaders during World War I: Anthony Wayne Blvd., George Croghan Jr Blvd., Winthrop Stricker Jr Blvd., Edwin Everett Benson Rd., Alfred Trousdale Ave., William Tecumseh Sherman Dr.( 1915 ). Only two streets within downtown remain un renamed; these are Washington St./Aliquippa Rd./Washington Plank/Washington Bridge Rd.(old alignment) and State St./Beechcroft Dr./State Bridge Rd.(new alignment). Mapleton Township changed their name back to MAPLE HEIGHTS TWP on December 4th 1951 following approval by both boards of trustees! The name change occurred because MAPLE HEIGHTS no longer functioned as an effective local government due primarily to annexation by neighboring townships since 1920 without any vote by citizens! Consequently most residents would refer to themselves simply as "maple"ites or simply "Maple" during this time period even though they technically lived in another township! On March 16th 1907 mapletownship lost its charter status as a result of an attack against their buildings by rival maplegroups led by Anthony Wayne aka “The Tiger” which left 3 dead including one Mapletoner mayor!!!
